About

Amy at her local farmer’s market, Ithaca, NY.

Welcome to Eggs on Sunday! Thanks for stopping by!

A little bit about me and my cooking philosophy, in a nutshell: I believe in cooking with whole, natural and organic ingredients, celebrating seasonal foods, and supporting local farmers by using local ingredients whenever I can. I’m not “officially” vegetarian, but I try to choose meat, dairy and eggs from animals that I can trust have been cared for, raised and processed humanely. I love to garden — the process of growing your own food is immensely rewarding and fun. I believe in taking time to enjoy food, and in relishing the joys of delicious food! As much as I love the pleasures of eating, I also love the process of cooking: chopping, slicing, stirring, sauteing, caring for the ingredients. I love learning new things — new methods of preparation, discovering new ingredients, the science behind why certain things happen in the kitchen.

coverEFLspr09In addition to writing this blog, I also write the Seasonal Cooking column for Edible Finger Lakes magazine.

On the photography you see on the blog: many people have emailed me and asked me what kind of camera I use. I shoot with a Canon SD750, which is a point-and-shoot. It’s not a particularly expensive or super-fancy camera, but it’s a solid model, it’s very portable, and I’ve been very happy with it so far. I don’t have any special photography setups, just try to use natural light when I can. For me, taking pictures is a constant learning process, and I like to really “notice” the food and what things about it seem pretty, interesting, or unique about it to me. Taking the time to look lovingly at your food can sometimes go a long way into getting a good picture.

Happy Eating!

    Amy,

I landed on your blog due to my late-night stop at Tastespotting (with your soup on display that I’m going to attempt to imitate) and I couldn’t resist leaving a message to express what a neat blog you have here! Oh, and I like to consider myself an avid fan of the gifts of organics as well as farmer’s markets! The ones here in the city is wonderful and I can’t afford NOT to go every week! In the pursuit of my love for food, great cooking, and new recipes (although, I haven’t accomplished/experienced as much as you, I don’t own a blog dedicated to this great adventure and my kitchen is almost too unbearably small), I hope that your cooking and everything related to food continues to flourish, as well as your lovely blog!

    Best wishes,
    Mary 🙂

What a lovely blog! Our CSA begins in a few weeks. It looks like I will get some ideas for our share here. Our blogs have some similarlies in theme if not in content. I use blix and write about eggs too. However, my blog is about my daughter, not food.

    Thanks for sharing your food!

  9. April 22, 2008 3:16 pm

I too ended up at your blog from Tastespotting, and you’re now on my Google Reader list. Not just the pictures and the food did me in, but the fact that it’s someone else who fell in love with Ithaca and the Farmer’s Market and Wegman’s there while undergrad at Cornell in the late 90s. I envy your return and will live vicariously by reading your blogs.

I’ve recently discovered your blog and have added it to my favourite places to visit. I LOVE to bake and cook and I have been drooling over many of your recipes, the desserts especially! I believe I’m going to be making the double chocolate pudding as soon as I get off the computer!
You seem to cook so much like I do – we have a lot of the same cookbooks – and I also like tinkering with recipes, adding a more nutritious ingredient in place of another and so on.
Can’t wait to see all that you share here!

Oooh! I’m a huge fan of your asparagus quinoa recipe (made it soooo many times when our asparagus patch was supplying this spring), and just today discovered that you’re in Ithaca! How cool — my husband and I live in Newfield, and have a huge veggie garden that keeps us stocked up during the summer and fall… If you ever feel like grabbing coffee with a fellow food lover, it would be great to meet up in town!

I discovered your blog on Wednesday afternoon after searching online for a recipe for ricotta, and well, I’m smitten. I can’t stop reading it! Every single one of the recipes you’ve posted has piqued my interest, and I would really love to make them all.
Yesterday, I made whole wheat pizza dough and homemade ricotta (added a little lemon zest). For dinner, I made a pizza with roasted butternut squash, roasted garlic, ricotta, red bell, vegetarian italian sausage and fresh basil. It was so good and my husband was thoroughly impressed. Today, so far, I’ve made a whole-grain sunflower seed -flaxseed – oat bread, lemon curd, and the lemon ricotta cheesecakes are chilling as I type. (I’m on vacation right now, so have lots of free time to cook.)
Your blog has expanded the way I think about food.
    Thank you!

    Hi Amy,

I came across your blog and noticed that you enjoy cooking with whole, fresh foods. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it, but Stonyfield Farm makes Oikos Organic Greek yogurt. It’s the only organic Greek yogurt on the market today. It’s triple strained making it extra thick and great for cooking with. I’d love to send you free coupons or product for you to give Okios a try. If you’re interested, send me an email at Kdrociak@stonyfield.com and let me know where to send them, along with the name of your blog. Thanks for your time!

    Take care,

    Hi-

I am not even sure how I came upon your blog, but both my husband (who is a professional chef) and I love it. We too try and eat locally and seasonally and only eat humanely raised meat, which means we have lots of vegetarian meals. I love your recipes, your descriptions, the creativity you have and your photographs. I read very few blogs, but this one is a favorite.

    Hi Amy-

I wanted to leave you a note to let you know how much I love your recipes! I am part of a brand-new, eight person vegetarian house in D.C. and we’re trying to get 70% of our food either from our CSA share, or grown in the back yard. Your seasonal recipes are amazing and I love looking at how you used your CSA share last year, and anticipating how we’re going to use ours soon. I have to double, and sometimes triple the ingredients (which opens it up to my errors) but still everyone swoons.

Thanks for all of your blog efforts thus far, and please keep up the amazing work!

    Mae

    Hello Amy,
My name is Tracey, and I work for a company that imports organic, fair trade cinnamon and vanilla from farmers in developing countries. We’re in the process of updating our website, and we’re looking for recipes that feature vanilla or cinnamon, or both as a prominent ingredient or flavor to post. We’re especially looking for recipes that are unique or different from the traditionally thought of genre for these ingredients. Of course we would give you credit for the recipe, and post a link back to your blog. You can check out our current website here: http://www.kestrelgrowth.com It will be updated in the next couple of weeks. Thanks so much, I look forward to speaking with you!

    Amy:

Wow, you’ve made my summer. I signed up for a CSA share (I live in NYC) and wasn’t quite sure what to do with the huge amounts of lettuce, garlic scapes, and other stuff I received. I will be reading your blog religiously year-round from now on. Selfishly, I hope you post TONS of CSA recipes because I’ll be trying as many as I possibly can. Also, your tips on storage are essential, I’m discovering.

One question – what’s the best way to limit myself to just your CSA posts? I don’t think I’ll have time for anything else! I tried the “Categories” drop-down menu, but that mixes up all of your CSA posts (and not in chrono order, as far as I can tell). Just being lazy, but if there is a way to “cleave off” those posts so your fans can follow them in order – that’d be even more amazing than what you’re already doing.

I will share your blog link with our CSA organizer to send out to the others receiving the weekly bounty in my neighborhood.

    THANK YOU!
    – Margaret

I’ve joined a CSA for the first time this summer, and as I try and use up my veggies I’m sure I’ll continue reading and hunting for recipes to use up all of my veggies! Thanks for providing them! 🙂
